The psychological struggles of Danish-international families

The rules for permanent residency in Denmark hold Danish-international families’ captive in a web of bureaucracy, instability, and uncertainty

The Danish rules for family reunification have a long range of negative psychological and emotional impacts on Danish-international families. The rules in the area are continuously changing and tightened, many Danish-international families experience being stuck in a life filled with applications, deadlines, and changing legal requirements causing instability and uncertainty for decades in their everyday family life.

Ægteskab Uden Grænser (ÆUG) has documented that many Danish-international families experience heightened levels of stress, anxiety, depression, issues with concentration, sick leave from work and studies, as well as other psychological implications as a consequence of the rules. This impacts not only the individual but the whole family and minimizes their ability to live a healthy and wholesome life together.

Denmark has the strictest rules in Europe, when it comes to family reunification and permanent residency - Challenging Danish-international couples' right to reside together in Denmark, while also undermining their ability to live a life on par with regular Danish families. This is something that ÆUG and Radikale Venstre wish to change. The program for this conference should not be seen as a definitive list with answers to all questions pertaining to the struggles of Danish-international couples navigating the rules for family reunification and permanent residency but is aiming to serve as a means to spark the attention and interest of those who want to further research the topic and call attention to the overlooked challenges.

We therefore encourage scholars, researchers, interest groups, among others, to participate at the conference in order to learn more about the negative impacts of the Danish rules, and feel encouraged to continue researching and call more attention to the lack of ethics and socio-economic consideration in the construction of the rules.
